Frameworks for Properties: Possible Worlds vs. Conceptual Spaces

چکیده

My discussion will be focussed on the notion of a property. I first present the standard intensional definition of a property, which is formulated in terms of possible worlds, and outline some of the philosophical problems this definition leads to. Then I introduce the notion of a conceptual space and show how such spaces can be used as a basis for a new criterion of what a property is. This criterion will be shown to elude the problems of the traditional approach. Furthermore, it will be argued that the criterion is useful for understanding prototype effects of properties and the role of properties in non-monotonic reasoning.

From Type Spaces to Probability Frames and Back, via Language

We investigate the connection between the two major mathematical frameworks for modeling interactive beliefs: Harsanyi type spaces and possible-worlds–style probability frames. While translating the former into the latter is straightforward, we demonstrate that the reverse translation relies implicitly on a background logical language. Once this “language parameter” is made explicit, it reveals...

Conceptual Models for Describing Virtual Worlds

A conceptual model of a virtual world is a high-level representation of how the objects behave and how they are related to each other. The conceptual models identify the most essential elements of the reality to be simulated. This is the first and a very important step in the process of designing a virtual world. Afterwards, specific and complex models can be implemented and inserted into these...

Issues in the Eecient Use of a Relation Ontology for Conceptual Reasoning Issues in the Eecient Use of a Relation Ontology for Conceptual Reasoning

In this paper we extend the framework of combinatorial and conceptual worlds to allow arbitrary relations. Conceptual worlds of properties provide a framework for knowledge representation, reasoning, and in particular for conceptual belief revision. However, it is desirable to consider such worlds where relations are not restricted to properties. Firstly, we discuss foundations of the conceptua...

Building a Comprehensive Conceptual Framework for Power Systems Resilience Metrics

Recently, the frequency and severity of natural and man-made disasters (extreme events), which have a high-impact low-frequency (HILF) property, are increased. These disasters can lead to extensive outages, damages, and costs in electric power systems. A power system must be built with “resilience” against disasters, which means its ability to withstand disasters efficiently while ensuring the ...
